鲍勃-瓦克斯伯格是犹太人，他的母亲和外祖母经营一家犹太书店和礼品店。在成长过程中，他深受《辛普森一家》《宋飞传》和《拉里·桑德斯秀》等节目的影响。他曾被诊断患有多动症，而且高中阶段的成绩很差，但是通过参加戏剧表演，他认识了插画师丽莎·哈纳沃尔特。哈纳沃尔特的画为他提供了灵感，使他创作出《马男波杰克》的故事，也是这样的经历，使得他写出了《我爱你，废柴》里荒诞、幽默却也饱含深情的故事。
